Requiem for Mother Dearest

Image
Where do mothers come from? I have always pondered this question. All humans come from planet earth, of course. But, what of mothers? They have this uniqueness about them that makes me wonder if they could only have come from earth like everybody else. For one thing, everybody that breathes on earth came out of a mother. Even the Pope, the President and the most powerful men and women on earth -- all those men and women of pomp and pageantry. Everybody must have done their plus or minus nine months in the womb of a woman. Every individual was nursed as an infant in the warm arms of a mother. Whenever you were hungry, mother was there. Whenever you felt fear, mother was there. Whenever you were in perplexity, mother was there. Mother was the one who would sacrifice everything to make you into a person of worth. My own mother was barely out of her teens when she married my father, a much older man. Mother was 19 when her first child was born. She said she was preparing for...

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

Image
The Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr Obadiah Mailafia, expresses his warm congratulations to the winner of the recently concluded elections, President Muhammadu Buhari. We came 3 rd in that process, with little or no money and no campaign resources. We celebrate this victory for the people. The election process was by no means perfect.  There were egregious anomalies in several polling stations. And we severely frown at the post-election provocative behaviour of youths carrying daggers, sticks and other dangerous weapons in the streets, all in the name of celebration. Despite these challenges, we remain democrats and we remain fervent believers in the New Nigeria Project.  It is in this spirit that I congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and wish him better health and more wisdom as he prepares to steer the affairs of our great country during another four years. Now is the time to rally our people beyond the narrow confines ...

Dr Obadiah and Mrs Margaret Mailafia Attend the Abuja Festival of Praise

Image
The 11th Abuja Festival of Praise took place at the International Conference Centre in our Federal Capital in the evening of Saturday 22 December. It was a well attended event. We were all highly uplifted by the choir which comprised singers from various churches around the country. They included youths from Sabon Rai Don Kowa (New Life for All) choir as well as children from the School of the Blind Abuja. The blind singers were awesome, as were indeed, the other choirs. The highlight was the orchestral rendition of Handel's Messiah conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor  Walter-Michael Vollhardt. Vollhardt came all the way from Germany. And he did not disappoint.  The Chair of the occasion was retired Head of State General Yakubu Gowon GCFR. The event is in its eleventh year and has been facilitated by retired General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma. It was for me a great day. Handel's Messiah is among my favourite music of all time. Handel was a great composer wh...

Fellow Nigerians, my dear compatriots, this is to wish all a blessed and joyful Christmas celebrations. The birth of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, is all about peace -- peace in our hearts, peace in our families, peace among our communities and our nation, and indeed, the world. Our country needs peace. We have been turmoil for years. Majority of our people wallow in poverty. As we enter the new electoral cycle, we need leaders who have the courage of their convictions, we need champions of peace who can lead our country into the Promised Land. This is what I humbly submit myself to you for as presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). I want to be your servant-leader. I want to bring hope and glory to our benighted country. I want to wipe the tears of widows and orphans. I want to reconcile all Nigerians to unite as one country with one purpose and one destiny. I also remember Leah Sharibu who still wallows in captivity. I appeal to our government and he...

Image
On the afternoon of Monday 26 November the Atiku Campaign Organisation invited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Dr Obadiah Mailafia to an inter-party forum discussion on Religious Dialogue as we prepare for the 2019 elections. In his own contributions Dr Mailafia urged all political party candidates to eschew bitterness and to avoid ethno-religious bigotry in the upcoming elections. He emphasised that Muslims and Christians are brothers and that we must work together to build a New Nigeria. He pointed out that the ADC will embrace all Nigerians and will work to fight the common ills that we face: poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and disease. He said that as a Christian, his duty is to love all people and to fight for all oppressed Nigerians who suffer injustice and marginalisation. Let it be on record that Dr Mailafia honoured an invitation to discuss the issue of religious co-existence with particular reference to the issues affecting Christ...

Dr Obadiah Mailafia Attends the Book Launch by Former Presdient Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Image
Tuesday 20th November witnessed one of the largest gatherings of the movers and shakers of Nigerian politics. Former Heads of State within and outside Nigeria, captains of industry and members of the diplomatic corps gathered at the ornate Congress Hall of the five-star Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. The occasion was the book presentation by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Titled, "My Transition Hours" , the book records his detour from being a science lecturer  into being an accidental politician, detailing a remarkable career that saw him to the summits of power. The author also seeks to answer the big question as to why he surrendered so quickly to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 even before INEC had finalised the electoral count. He had famously responded that he did not think his personal ambition was worth the blood of any Nigerian. That singular act made him a great statesman and established him as one of the architects of modern Nigerian democracy. Dr....
